I know that some of you are reading the title of the post and you are thinking, “NO!  Let’s just have summer.”  Well, I am in the same boat, but it is time to start thinking a little bit about back to school shopping just because if you plan ahead you really can save!  If you follow me on Instagram then you have seen from my stories how I spent only $59 on most (minus 3 items) of the school supplies for both boys.  BOTH BOYS!  If you want more info on that feel free to email me or leave a comment below.  Well, shoes happen to be the biggest expense on your back to school list and I want to give you a few ways you can save this season.Ways to save on back to school shoes

SIZING

First of all, you have to think about what size you think your child will be in a few months, not just the size they are currently.  Has your child recently had a growth spurt or do you anticipate that may happen right before school starts?  A good rule of thumb, no pun intended, is to have a thumbs length between the top of your child’s toe and the edge of the shoe.  Make sure your child is standing with all of his/her weight on the ground with flat feet.  Next, have them lift their toe up and measure.  If they have just recently had a growth spurt you may want to try for a half thumbs length.Ways to save on back to school shoes

VERSATILITY AND COMFORT

The next thing to think about is versatility.  How far can you make this one shoe stretch?  For instance, will it work for some dress clothes?  Will it match most articles of clothing?  Is it comfortable enough that your child will want to put the shoe on over and over again?  Is it made from fabric or with colors that are easily cleaned?  Will it meet the needs of all the school requirements?  If you can find one or two shoes that meet all of these qualifications then you are even better off!  Buying just one or two pairs as opposed to 3 or 4 is a huge cost savings.ways to save on back to school shoes

SALES

Be on the lookout for the sales!  While I know you probably don’t want another email clogging up your inbox, the summer is when it is important to be on the mailing lists or text alerts from stores so that you are notified of the sales.  You can always unsubscribe once the summer is over and you’ve made your purchases.  However, some really great clearance sales have yielded some really great school shoes over the years.  Several stores will do a summer clearance just so they can make way for the new fall styles.  The shoes are still perfectly good for the fall, but are just not the “newest” edition.ways to save on back to school shoes

A great new find for me this year has been KidsShoes.com.  Davis picked out the best pair of sneakers for only $15!  He is so in love with these things that he has been wearing them non-stop.  I guess I will find out soon how good they are in the washer!  But for $15, I could afford to buy him 2 pairs and keep one for play and one for school. ways to save on back to school shoes

I also grabbed up a pair of dress shoes for him from KidsShoes.com that will work all year (crossing my fingers).  He can wear them now without socks and then in the Fall and Winter with socks and dress pants.  There are several name brands that are great as to choose from, so make sure to check them out as a resource for savings.
