Mango is one of those fruits that I’ve only recently started enjoying. I don’t think I had that much exposure to it early on, but I love it and love sharing it with the kids. If you are looking for a new way to try mango then you are going to love this sweet and savory mango spears recipe from Honey Bunches of Oats! The boys really enjoy them and you can always adjust it depending upon likes and dislikes. I honestly think that just about anything on a stick appeals to kids! Ok, almost anything. Here’s the super simple recipe:
SWEET AND SAVORY MANGO SPEARS RECIPE
Ingredients:
- 1/3 cup Honey Bunches of Oats Cereal
- 4 mangoes (I used pre-sliced Mango Spears)
- 2 limes, zest and juice
- 1 teaspoon chili powder
- 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt
Instructions:
- In a food processor, ground cereal into a fine powder. Set aside.
- Slice each mango lengthwise into 4 equal size pieces and remove outer skin. Insert a wooden stick into one end of each mango piece (I used skewers and cut them to size).
- In a small bowl, zest the limes. Add chili powder, salt and prepared ground cereal. Stir to combine.
- Slice limes and squeeze juice over the mango pieces. Sprinkle each mango piece with the chili and cereal blend. Serve immediately.
I love the little hint of spice that these have. It’s just enough to make it interesting. Like I said before, if you are not big on spice then just eliminate the chili powder! Using the Honey Bunches of Oats as the coating gave it a simple sweet flavor and a subtle crunch. Now I’m trying to come up with other things to coat this in! I think it could be great on pineapple!
I absolutely adore mangoes. I think this recipe sounds amazing 🙂
This looks so good! I love Honey Bunches of Oats, but had never thought to use it as a coating. And mangoes? YUM!
Ooh I like this idea lot. I just used Honey Bunches of Oats for a different recipe and I have plenty left over. I love mangoes and that chili spice sounds good!
Thank you so much for sharing this! Mango is my favorite fruit, so I can’t wait to give these a try!
I haven’t had mangoes in so so long! These look so great, I bet my kids would LOVE these!
ooh those look good. I can never think about Mangos without remembering that episode of Seinfeld about them. Too funny!
These really do look good. I like sweet and savory combos so I need to try this recipe soon.
What a great idea, Love the idea of some crunch with these. Crunch always adds a nice texture.
I never thought of adding a savory aspect to fresh mango but it sounds delicious. I always welcome a bit of crunch too!
I would have never thought of adding these flavors to a mango. My kids also love anything on a stick, so I’ll be giving this a try soon.
My kids already love mango but this is a way to change it up every once in a while. Thank you for sharing this recipe.
Both of our girls LOVE mango and this looks like an easy recipe! Will be giving it a try… Thanks!
I love when summer rolls around and it’s mango season again! It’s such a delicious fruit!
These look so good! Better yet, I like that they are on a stick. Kids tend to reach for skewered fruit faster than when it’s placed in a bowl.
The mango spears sounds wonderful. What a great recipe.
I’m so NOT a fan of mangos, but we LOVE Honey Bunches of Oats Cereal! It’s the all time fav in our home.
Holy crap! That looks really delicious! Who knew that cereal was so versatile!
I can’t eat mangos, but I bet this would be tasty on other tropical fruits. The sweet and the heat are a good match for the little bit of crunch.
Yummy! I need to expand my fruit diet! I need to add some melon to my diet!
Mmmm that looks and sounds so amazing, especially with the crunch from the cereal. Summertime is the best. I love all of the fruit!
I am so impressed by foodies like you – I would NEVER think to mix mangoes and cereal! Looks delish!
I love mangoes…so sweet and delicious. I like the cereal crumble – giving the sweetness a little crunch. Great snack for summer!
I love mangos, but I prefer it in its natural form. This does look intriguing though
I totally gotta show this to my mom! She is obsessed with mangos so this with the honey bunches of oats incorporated into this would make her sooo happy!
Now this is a treat that I can totally get behind. I’m constantly looking for things to eat that aren’t full of sugar. thanks
My what a neat combination. Looks like a tasty treat.
