When it comes to Easter I am just as much a lover of all the chocolate bunnies, marshmallow chicks and jelly beans as the kids are. I love to decorate and get ready for Easter. I love the bright colors, the bunnies and the joy the season brings. Most of all, I love the reason we celebrate and I delight in sharing that reason with my own children.
Both boys know the true meaning of Easter and I love being able to talk to them more in depth about just what our Savior has done for us. We definitely have traditions, but I think one of my favorites would be the Easter Egg Hunt. Now, in the hunt, you don’t have to fill them full of candy (however that is so much fun) but we also like to include scriptures and maybe even a small cross. There is also the empty egg that represents the empty tomb. In the past we have even “egged” the houses of friends which means leaving a dozen filled eggs with a little poem on their door step. Each egg has a special meaning which represents the Easter Story.
Another fun tradition we have is reading various stories and devotionals about Easter. One of our favorites is The Berenstain Bears and the Easter Story. It is such a great read for young or even a little older. I love that it tells the message and also lets kids know it is ok to be excited about the candy too! The love of God and what He did for us is clearly illustrated in a way that is loving and understandable by kids. If you don’t already own this one it is a must for your home library and would be a sweet addition to an Easter basket.
