Reading Under the Stars and Everywhere Else #SummerReading

scholasticlogoFor those of you who follow me on Instagram and Twitter you know that we just enjoyed our family favorite tradition of a beach vacation at Ocracoke.  This has been our favorite place since before the boys were born and now we adore sharing our home away from home with them.  One thing remains the same when we travel and that is READING.  One of the first things I have the boys pack up are their books.  I ask them to pick out at least 5 of their favorites to take along for the ride and to read during quiet time.  You may remember me telling you about our Scholastic Reading Challenge last month as well as ways we make reading fun around our house.  Well, we added some friends this week which made it even more fun!

Scholastic Reading Under the Stars

Because we were at the beach we took a few opportunities to make use of our beautiful surroundings.  My favorite time at the beach is night when all is calm and peaceful.  I love to take a good book or devotional and just think.  The boys definitely want to dig in the sand, but stealing a few moments of peace on the beach is something I don’t mind teaching them early.  I want them to appreciate it as well as all of the beauty around them.  Our house this year had a very cool cupola at the top with windows all around.  This soon became the “hide out” for the kids.  It also provided a very cool place for reading under the stars!

We’ve been tracking Graham’s hours on the Scholastic website and it is amazing to me just how much that kid has read!  The challenges have been helpful to give him extra incentive to read even more.  Have you started tracking your child’s reading hours at Scholastic yet?

Here are a few key dates to keep in mind:

  • Every Monday, check Scholastic on Twitter for the #MondayMinutes. See the total number of minutes kids have read to date!
  • Every Friday, follow the Scholastic Facebook calendar for Friday Freebies!
  • Every Friday, check out the Summer Reading Challenge Pinterest Board for a new collage of summer books.

Why not get a few friends together, roast some S’Mores and read under the stars together?  Here is an adorable invitation you can download and use for your Reading Under the Stars Party:

Reading Under the Stars Party

This year’s Summer Reading theme is Reading Under the Stars, and is powered by EVEREADY®, the maker of batteries and flashlights, to encourage families to discover new and fun ways to explore reading outside this summer.

How nice that you incorporated your surroundings into a great learning experience. More parents should do this.

This sounds really good,My kids like spending a lot of time outside so there is not much time for reading but if we was to do reading under the stars I bet they would jump at the chance.

I love Scholastic books. Ever since I was a kid. I would bring home those order sheets and beg my mom to order me all the ones I had circled!

This is such a cool (and fun!) program. My son loves to read and every night we have to battle at how many books he can read before bed. (I just can’t read to him for hours on end. The child must go to sleep at some point!) It’s a good problem to have. 🙂

A reading under the stars party sounds like so much fun! We just completed the reading challenge at the library last week. The kids are so excited they earned their free book, and they’ll be even more excited to see the coupons they earned to the zoo, pottery studio, aquarium and more. We love reading challenges!!

Summer reading programs are great. Kids tend to put their brains on auto pilot over the summer, and reading programs are a great way to keep them actively using their noodles.

A “reading under the stars” party sounds like it would be a lot of fun for kids. Heck, my daughter would still probably love it and she’s grown now!

My son always packs up books too when we’re off on a travel adventure (or just in the backyard sleeping in the tent). My daughter is a teen and she still has a love of reading, but she indulges on her Kindle these days. 🙂

How fun is that! Before the summer is over, I will get my act in gear and take the kiddos outside for story time!

I think having introducing fun places for kids to read will keep them interested in reading instead of getting board with it. Wish something like this had been more popular when I was a kid 🙂
