I have been curling my hair with a flat iron only for about 8 years now. It all started when I chopped about 3 inches off my hair and needed a new way to curl it. I fell in love with the method because the curls actually stay for days and fall into the most beautiful waves! If you are more of a video person, make sure to check out the Reel on my Instagram. This post does use some affiliate links but are all products I love and use daily.
Step 1: Spray with Heath Protection & Comb Out
I first spray my hair with heat protection. I have used several brands and the one that is my current favorite is Bondi Boost Heat Protectant Spray. It doesn’t leave my hair feeling weighed down or give it a sticky residue. It is perfect and has a light scent. I use a wide tooth comb to make sure my hair is free from knots. Make sure to start at the bottom of your hair and work your way up if you do have knots.
Step 2: How to Turn Flat Iron
Grabbing a section of hair, make 1/2 turn away from your face and pull slowly at a 90 degree angle. Pull straight at the end and leave about an inch to a half inch uncurled. The size and shape of your curl depends upon how big of a section you curl and how slowly you pull the styler through your hair. You can alternate the direction you turn the flat iron after you get past your ear. I personally think curling towards your face before your ear can give a look that you may not be going for.
Step 3: Spray with Texture Spray
Using your favorite texture spray, apply from the ends to about mid-shaft of your hair. This will help define the curls and waves as well as keep them going for days on end. I haven’t found the perfect texture spray yet, but do love the Texturizing Sea Salt Spray from Not Your Mother’s.
Step 4: Lift at the Roots and Comb Through with Fingers
In order to avoid the Shirley Temple curls, make sure you rake your fingers through as well as lift your hair at the roots. This will ensure that your curl has more of a natural look that will eventually fall into gorgeous waves. I also love to use the Kenra Dry Volume Burst 3 to give a little extra volume each day. Make sure you use the spray by aiming it up while pulling your hair away from your head. Imagine trying to boost your hair off your scalp!
My Favorite 2-in-1 Flat Iron/Curling Iron
I love the Bondi Boost Airburst Styler because it works great as a flat iron or a curling iron. The rounded shape as well as the “stay clamped” idea make this great for both. It also has the added bonus of using a fan to burst cool air on your hair in order to lock in the style and seal the cuticle. I also love that you have 5 different heat settings to choose from. Keep an eye on the website because they promote sales often! If you follow me on Instagram I will make sure to alert you there as well.
