I can tell when my kids are growing because it means that our pantry stays thin. Everyone told me that having two boys would be like raising bottomless pits when it came to food and were they ever right! I would venture to say that most young kids are like this though. So, I like to have healthy snacks on hand especially for after school when they need to be refueled and ready for outdoor play.
We recently took a trip to the apple orchard to pick up our apples for the fall. It is a trip that we always make and it creates lots of wonderful memories for our family. When we leave we have more than enough apples for snacks, pies and other recipes. So, we have been relying upon those apples to fill bellies before, during and after school. Now, my kids will definitely eat an apple plain, but I also like to pair it with fun additions to liven things up.
Here’s what we use to liven up apple slices:
- Yogurt
- raisins
- cheese sticks and make kabobs
- honey
- caramel sauce
- peanut butter
Now peanut butter has gotten even more fun! Jif has the line of Whips that I told you about last month. I like the variety and the fact that you can make it seasonal for the kids. For the fall I’ve been pairing apple slices with the Jif Whipped Peanut Butter & Pumpkin Pie Spice spread. Just cut up your apple slices and put a tablespoon or so of the spread out for dipping. You could also spread some on top of an apple slice and sprinkle with raisins. The boys enjoy the flavor and it is a great way to break up the norm.
What are some fun ways you shake up the norm for after school snacks?
I’ve not tried the new Jif whipped peanut butter, yet, but I adore peanut butter, so I’m sure I’ll love it. I’ll look for it the next time I go to the grocery store!

My kids don’t like the flavor of pumpkin. Can you believe that? It’s almost like they can’t be mine LOL. I on the other hand would LOVE this as a snack! Yum!
