How many of you can sing “Let it Go” word for word? I have two boys and I can tell you all about that movie and song. I can also tell you many other countless songs from various movies and musicals. Some of my favorite are from the past. Graham is now at an age where I can share with him some of my old favorites and have him appreciate them.
Thanks to Netflix, I have access to many of them any moment I’d like. Chitty Chitty Bang Bang was one I remember from growing up that Graham really likes. How long has it been since you’ve seen this one? It is pure magic! Footloose was one of the first movies Matthew and I watched once we got our Netflix subscription. While we won’t be sharing it with the boys, it is a fun one that leaves you with a good feeling. Of course, who could forget Grease? I remember playing Sandy in a talent show our school hosted way back in the day. I can for sure sing every word of those songs! Watching my niece participate in her middle school’s version of High School Musical just last week was such a treat and flood of memories.
You can find all of these classics and many more on Netflix right now. How about introducing your kids to a new/old favorite and even creating a few fun DIY crafts to set up your own stage?
Here are a few of my top 5 favorites from around the web:
1. DIY Microphone from Moonfrye
2. DIY Stage Speakers from Mama Stacey Celebrates
3. DIY Pallet Stage from Sugar Baby Boutique
4. DIY Mirror Curtain from Ruffled
5. DIY Folding Pallet Backdrop from Made by Marzipan
So, what will you create and share to create a musical in your home?
What a great idea! I am adding this to my summer activities for my kiddos! I just got back from pinning it!
My little man loves to dance around and will usually pick up anything that is remotely microphone shaped and pretend that it’s a microphone and start singing into it. It’s so cute.
This is a good activity for kids during the summer
My husband is introducing TMNT to our son, as well as the Avengers on Netflix, and he;s loving them – I think it’s more that Daddy watches WITH him that what it is, though.
We have recently aged out of this type of programming, but it is great to know the efforts to keep children’s TV separate from adult shows. And I love hearing Let it Go sung by kids everywhere I go!
thanks,
MItch
My kids would love these DIY instruments for sure!!
This is an excellent idea! We do this, too, but it’s with LeapFrog movies lol! Those were the first ones that my little boy started singing and it really helps with learning words, sounds and rhythm. Thank goodness for Netflix. Streaming is the best! We use the little microphone that works without power–it echoes. I also have a real mic and keyboard.
This is a great activity for kids! So creative!
I stumbled upon Crybaby on Netflix yesterday, and was impressed that it was available to stream! I have a weakness for musicals (and the cheesier, the better!)
We may be the only family who hasn’t seen Frozen (though, I bought it at a great price several weeks ago.) That said, we have all the makings for a fun musical. My aunt gave my toddler a microphone for Christmas, we gave him a guitar and he has other various instruments around the house. And he LOVES coming up with his own songs!
Um, yeah. Guilty. We know all of the words! And, use everything as a microphone!
All great ideas! My daughter is 10 and loves to record herself singing on my camera phone. She isn’t very good, but that never seems to stop her lol.
We used to make noisemakers out of an old coffee can and some rice. Me and my sister and brother made one heck of a racket
I don’t think I’d ever get a wink of sleep if my son got his hands on a microphone. He
ll just have to deal using a hairbrush for the time being. Lol
Footloose and Grease were faves of mine too! I think I had a fondness for movies with music in them. I also LOVED Dirty Dancing!
Our kids our fireplace as a stage. And the both have a guitar but only 1 microphone. Good times this summer.
We love Netflix. I also love that mirror curtain you linked to. I think my daughter would enjoying having that.
This is a great idea! My kids are a bit older and probably won’t want to do this
What creative fun! Sure beats staring at a screen, right?
What a cute idea! My boys love to sing!
My oldest daughter would always have so much fun creating her dramas and crafts or stories or whatever. I loved seeing how creative she was!
I watched Grease with my daughter a couple of week ago. She LOVED it and now walks around singing the Grease soundtrack.
Oh my I loved Chitty Chitty Bang Bang! We sang that out loud, so much fun!
Chitty Chitty Bang Bang is one of my favorites too. I remember all the words to all the songs still!
How fun! I liked a ‘Spoonful of Sugar’ from Mary Poppins. And I still randomly belt out, ‘You’re the one that I want, ooh ooh ooh” from Grease (as do my older children when they’re making fun of their mother 😉 ).
Music is definitely a very important aspect of life and starting kids off early on loving music is so beneficial! I LOVE these DIY music projects. They’re so unique, creative, and fun!
we love to play rock band. That would be a fun way to make a musical
My son takes drum lessons at a place called School of Rock. Each kid scans their own ‘backstage pass’ to check in, parents aren’t allowed past the velvet ropes, etc. It’s really neat. But it’s required that you do private lessons but also the put you in a band (with vocalist/guitar/keyboards/etc). At the end of each session there is a big concert (with light show of course!) at a big venue. Music is so important!
These are great ideas and tips! My daughter is a dancer and it seems like singing comes with that.
What fun! My niece would love this!
i just saw a craft for stage curtain DIY. it used cheap regular curtains doctored up with felt and a tension shower rod.
Disco ball and strobe light! My kids love to dance
My daughter {born in the late 90s} is really into 80s movies. I can’t begin to tell you how many times she has watched The Breakfast Club. We also both really love watching Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, Dirty Dancing and a few more together.
We love musicals! I love the ideas you found to create a stage for your little performer!
What a cute little boy! And I must add, this is a brilliant idea! Thank you for sharing!
