When it comes to my skin in the winter things start to get a little bit concerning when January rolls around. My sweet husband and oldest son suffer the most from dry skin. As we have been on this dry skin journey I have really been on the search for what causes it and what works best to cure it. I like to use holistic skin health care practices for my family so I look for the underlying causes. What I’ve also learned is that there are a lot of myths floating around out there about skin health and beauty routines in general. Here are 3 myths about dry skin in the winter you should be aware of:
1. Moisturizer Needs to be Thick to Work: Not true (thank heavens)! When I was younger I had a friend that suffered from seasonal eczema. I would watch her slather on this thick cream and then try to participate in sports. Not that it was the worse thing in the world, but I know it was uncomfortable for her. Or how about those who slather on the petrolatum? I can’t even imagine. Good news! What you do need to look for are moisturizers that help protect your skin as well as rebuild it. Aveeno® Daily Moisturizing Lotion contains ACTIVE NATURALS® Collodial Oatmeal and rich emollients in order to protect skin and restore the pH balance.
2. Apply Lotion Immediately After a Shower or Bath: This is one I remember hearing from the time I was little. I used to follow this religiously in the winter months. The reality is that taking baths and showers strips the moisture from your skin. Yes, it is good to put on the lotion daily, but you are better off skipping a shower or bath and applying the lotion to retain even more moisture. For those of you saying, “I can’t skip a shower because my hair will be greasy” well, the same goes for your hair! You can start to train your hair by taking a shower every other day. Don’t believe me? Just give it a try for about 2 weeks.
3. Drinking Extra Water Will Cure Dry Skin: I didn’t used to love water, that wonderful blessing from nature, but now you will not find me without my water bottle. However, as important as it is to drink, it will not cure your dry skin dilemmas. Your dry skin is best conquered with a daily moisturizer (but that doesn’t give you a free pass on drinking water)!
