The Modern-Day Pioneer: Simple Living in the 21st Century

If you are looking for a new how-to book to fill your shelves this one is a keeper.  I was sent a copy of The Modern-Day Pioneer: Simple Living in the 21st Century to review a few weeks ago.  I was immediately intrigued by the name as our family tries to find ways to make our life a more simple one daily.  My husband has dreams of living off the land and making most of what we consume.  Lofty dreams, but we try to live as simple as possible.

What you will find in this book are several different how-to guides on everything from sewing, cooking, farming, crafting, bread making and more.  What I think is unique about The Modern-Day Pioneer is that it offers different scenarios for your particular living situation.  I like the fact that this book takes into consideration that not everyone is living in the country on 15 acres of land.  Charlotte Denholtz is the author and she does an excellent job of identifying what EVERY person can do to live more simply.

The Modern-Day Pioneer book review

My personal favorite section right now is the bread making section.  This is something I really want to do for our family.  I feel like we could really cut back on the grocery bill as well as live a more healthy lifestyle if I am in control of what I am putting into the bread and bread products we consume.  The Modern-Day Pioneer offers tips on how to do this without the cost of a bread machine {even though that is the next thing on my kitchen want list}.

I think the next section I will be submerging myself in is the preserving section.  We have an excellent assortment of wild berry bushes that bloom around here during the spring and summer.  I figure if it is there and free why not use it?  I have several neighbors who are canning experts and have offered to help me along the way.  I’m glad I have this guide book to go back to when the time rolls around.

You can purchase The Modern-Day Pioneer for about $12.21.  What an excellent gift idea!

  1. This might have to be a book that I pick up. Melinda has been saying for the past 10 years that she would love for us to live on a farm and to own cattle and whatnot and grow our own food and stuff like that. Problem is I have no idea how to be a farmer and neither does Melinda. LOL. Thanks for sharing this book.

  2. For those wanting to give it a look, the NC Digital Library has it for loan.

  3. I NEED this book thanks for introducing me!
