What a blessing it is to be surrounded by books. It can be easy to take for granted the fact that you can provide your children with the books and materials that they need in order to grow and learn. The reality is that many kids around the US desperately need help getting the materials they need in order to be successful. Yes, libraries are free, but getting there is not always a possibility.
Many local Rotary Clubs have some excellent programs going on in order to try to change the cycle. Check out what Washington’s Rotary Club is doing with their District 5030 Third Grade Reading Project:
The District 5030 Third Grade Dictionary Project is a literacy project aiming to provide dictionaries to all third grade students living within the area of our 55 clubs — from Tukwila to Seattle, Bellevue to Kent, Kirkland to Federal Way, Lynnwood to Rainier. In third grade, students are beginning to learn word and dictionary skills. By giving each student a dictionary to own and take home, these children will have the resource in their home to develop the very important word skills required of all students in the State of Washington. Dictionaries are very useful to all students and more specifically to English Language Learners and students living below the poverty level. In addition, having dictionaries on-hand mean that parents and guardians will be in a better position to assist with their child’s homework. In doing so, they will also become more competent learners and teachers of their child.
My own children have developed favorite books over the years and the two that are sticking out the most right now are the Little Blue Truck and Little Blue Truck Leads the Way by Alice Schertle. They are an instant hit with Davis because they feature all types of trucks and vehicles, animals and sound words. I love these books because they teach so many concepts in just one sitting that even the youngest readers can catch onto. Not only will children associate animals with sounds, but they will pick up on rhyme and rhythm. More than that, kids will learn valuable life lessons about treating others with kindness. Along with all of the lessons being learned, kids will be pulled in with the vivid yet retro illustrations.
