June is National Internet Safety Month #CyberSafe #sponsored

I participated in a campaign on behalf of Mom Central Consulting for Boys & Girls Clubs of America. I received a promotional item as a thank you for participating.  I have a strong belief in educating others about cyber safety which is why I chose to participate in this campaign.  All thoughts, ideas and opinions are completely my own.

cyber safety

If you have a child who has access to technology you are probably already aware of how very real cyber bullies and cyber safety can be.  Having a personal connection with the Boys and Girls Club of America and being a school counselor, I really felt like this was a post worth writing and sharing with you all.  In order to test your cyber smarts, BGCA has created a short quiz that I think every parent should take.  You can take the Cyber Survivor Quiz today and see how you measure up.  While my boys are not yet old enough to deal with social media, we are extremely cautious with them and their time on the iPad and iPhones.  There are just so many ways they could stumble across things they should not.  Right now we do a lot of supervising and control things with parental settings.

Working in the high school I deal with cyber bullying pretty much on a weekly basis.  There is always something going on!  As a parent it is important that you are aware of all of the ins and outs of social media.  I have found that most parents feel more confident about Facebook but less confident with Twitter.  My plea to you is to learn them both.  Open and honest conversations are definitely going to need to happen with your kids.  Make sure to speak to them frequently about what they are doing online and by all means, “friend” and “follow” them!  Have you “googled” your child’s name?  It would be a great way to find out what types of privacy settings they are using on their social networks.

For more tips and ideas make sure to visit CyberSafeFutures.org.  You can take the quiz as well as watch handy videos that will help you be a more informed parent.
