We truly do not have that many unexpected or last minute guests at our home, but when we do it is usually a mad dash to quickly get things in order before they arrive. You know the phone call, “Hey girl! Are you going to be there for the next few minutes? Could I drop by just for a second?”. There have been times that Graham has to duck as I hurl the toys across the room into the toy box. He was in the line of fire as I frantically sprayed the air freshener one time, a prime example of the chaos that happens when I get those calls. Luckily, it avoided his eyes and went straight for the hair. Graham then thought it was cool to have “steam” like a train. Leave it to him to make a stressful situation hilarious!
So, what I have learned from these near injury encounters is that we need to either keep our house spotless at all times (right), or we need to have a speedy cleaning plan. The second option was the one that made sense for our family so we came up with a few tips that I think could help other families like ours.
First of all, you need to have a few laundry baskets on hand–preferably empty ones. Having the baskets not only helps you move things out of the way, but you can organize the items. I usually have one for toys and one for miscellaneous items. Once your company leaves you have a great excuse to find a home for all of the miscellaneous items that have been collecting.
The next step is to tackle the living room floor with the vacuum cleaner or mop. Remember that you are not going for perfection. Just hit the high spots (give it a lick and a promise as a friend of mine says). Use a wet rag to take one swipe over surfaces that are in direct contact with guests. Bonus if you actually have time to grab some disinfectant.
The last step is the most important. Having some type of air freshener on hand is a must! When you have been in your house all day you may not notice the funky smells that are creeping in. That is why you always notice smells when you first walk in the door. So, we like to keep the Glade Scented Oil PlugIns and refills on hand at all times. One is located by the front door and another in our kitchen. I also love the Premium Room Sprays that are available. Make sure to keep things “springy” with the brand new Glade Limited Edition Spring Collection. You can find these at your local Food Lion and use the $2 off digital coupon from Glade to save!
