School has started back up and as exciting as it is, the first week with the students is generally one of the most hectic of the entire school year. Working as a high school counselor is such a phenomenal job, but just like any job, it comes with its challenges. I adore the students I work with. Any parent will tell you that I love their kids like I love my own. But that word right there, kids, that is what they are. And just like my own children, they need things and there are 300 of them! Often times I will end the day wondering why I am so hungry and will remember I only had a half a second to eat that handful of popcorn that’s been hanging out on my desk all week.
So, this week I decided to try and find a few places I could hide in order to catch my breath. I really only needed 5 minutes, or even just 3. I don’t think 3 minutes alone is too much to ask for. I have such sweet friends at work who have even offered up different locations throughout the school. The math department (Also know as the Sine Sisters) told me I could use their storage closet anytime. The beauty of their closet is that it actually has carpet (which makes for a more comfortable seating situation) and it is very spacious. I think it may even be bigger than my office! I have been a long time fan of pudding and coffee, so when I heard about Cafe Breaks I knew I had to give them a try. It combines pudding and a coffee flavor for a more “grown up” version of snacking. Besides, that old popcorn on my desk was getting stale! They were only $1.38 at Walmart and I picked up both flavors: Mocha Latte and Caramel Latte.
So, I grabbed a cup of Cafe Breaks and a spoon and headed off throughout the building. Now, let’s be realistic, heading out through the building is no easy task. There are inevitably people who will find you and stop you. My goal was to walk fast and keep my head low! My first quick stop was the gym. There were no students and it is just so nice in there (brand new). At first I was worried that the gym teacher might throw me out since I was coming in there with food. When I explained the situation she actually directed me to this comfy bench in the brand new fitness room. Granted, I have no idea what this bench is for, but I will say it was a good place to rest and eat my Mocha Latte (my favorite flavor by the way). Not to mention, look at the name… “escape!” The Sine Sisters came with me to document the journey and to help me find new “hiding” locations.
Now, our school building is full of windows. We are very much an “open concept” except we have “window walls”. As cool as it is, you are pretty much working in a fish bowl. There are very few places you can hide and hide well so it was time to head to that coveted closet that was offered up to me so many times last school year. It was time to take them up on it. I think it was the best choice. I not only had endless colorful supplies around me to perk up my mood, but there was peace, quiet and somewhat comfy carpet.
And, if all else fails, I discovered on my little journey across the school, that I can fit in the full length lockers! So, I’ve got options for catching my breath and getting some peace even at work!
