Davis’s first birthday was a few weeks ago and because he loves vehicles so much we decided it would be fun to throw a construction themed birthday party in our front yard for a few close friends. We wanted to keep it small because first birthdays can be overwhelming. We learned our lesson with Graham! It was also nice to be able to have it at the house where Davis was more comfortable. It was also a good excuse to finish up the playhouse Matthew built for the boys this spring by adding sand to the sandbox.
I cut road and caution signs out of cardboard boxes and painted them. We used the big Sharpie makers to write in the messages. Matthew thought it would be fun to post this one at the top of the driveway so that cars drove under it on the way in.
I purchased the small safety cones from Amazon. They came in a pack of 6 and are originally made for people who race RC cars. Matthew drilled holes in the top so that we could use them as balloon weights. We still ended up needing a bit more weight so we added washers to the string.
Matthew picked up caution tape from Lowe’s and I purchased this roll from Amazon for the playhouse. We used the caution tape from Lowe’s to block in the perimeter we wanted children to stay in (so no one wander off into the woods).
There was also a station created just for painting! Don’t worry. We used finger paints and I gave them brushes. I didn’t want any upset parents!
Of course, the main event was the sand! We even purchased a small excavator from Northern Tool for about $30 for the kids to sit on and dig in the sand. That was probably the most popular item. Notice the dads in the back ground? There was also a game of horse shoe going on for the big boys!
I made use of all of the boys construction toys to display the food {safety cones bugles, logs (pretzel sticks), wheels (chocolate doughnuts), hand dipped bugles in white chocolate (my attempt at orange safety cones)}. Matthew had the cute idea to use our wheel barrow as the ice bucket with drinks in it!
Davis’s cake was cute and easy to make. There is no baking required! Make sure to check out the complete recipe for the Back Hoe Birthday Cake.
Of course, what would a construction party be without construction workers? We purchased tool belts from Lowe’s for $1 a piece. I found construction hats on Amazon that were sold 12 to a pack that were very reasonably priced. I also found a construction sticker book to go in the tool belt for each child on Amazon. We had some leftover construction truck stickers that I let them use to decorate their hats with.
Overall, we had an amazing time and loved every minute of Davis’s first birthday!
