When it comes to books for new readers you can easily be overwhelmed with choices. There are just so many great books out there! I remember when Graham first started reading by himself I wanted to find the most engaging series for him so that he would be drawn in and never look back. We found several that were wonderful and I am so thankful for that jump start. Now that Davis is starting to learn to read, I am on the lookout for books that will suit him. He is not yet an independent reader, but I know that his time is coming within the next year.
I love working with Scholastic and am thrilled to tell you about Scholastic Branches. These books were created for kids ages 5-8 who are new independent readers. Since Davis is not an independent reader yet, and these books are a little too young for Graham, I will be reading these to Davis. He really enjoys having stories read to him and these are the perfect way to introduce him to chapter books. These chapter books feature artwork on every page which means it will keep new readers engaged and interested. Davis is still very much about the pictures. I can remember when Graham first started reading chapter books he would often ask why there were not very many pictures. The plots are fast paced in order to keep the attention and focus and the characters are relatable to the age group.
Davis really enjoys the Boris series. Like I said before, he is not yet an independent reader, but this book series is perfect for him. The words are short and simple and the pictures are engaging. Many of the words are simple sight words which means that this will be a perfect transition for him once he becomes an independent reader. It is fun to read with him and then say, “We will have to find out what happens in the next chapter tomorrow!” He generally tells me that he is going to “read” ahead and figure it out before I can. I love that he is so excited about what is coming next and thrilled to have him love books as much as his older brother.
