Blackberry Dumpling Recipe + Summer Reading Fun!

The Best Blackberry Dumplings Recipe You'll Ever Try!Disclosuregraphiccompensation

This has been one of the longest summer breaks since Graham started school.  On the one hand it has been great, on the other, I feel like it means that next summer will be cut so short!  It is nice to have a happy medium in my opinion.  With all of the time we have had and our commitment  to try to stay local this summer, we have been finding a lot of different ways to entertain ourselves.  Of course, one of those ways is reading.  Graham has always been an avid reader and I definitely enjoy a good book and some peace on the swing.  Davis is just learning to read, but enjoys to be read to.  So, how do you keep it fun and entertaining especially on a long summer?  Well, for us, that means making it relevant.

blackberries

One of the things we have enjoyed this summer is picking the wild blackberries that grow right in our back yard.  There are bushes and bushes of them and I think I get more excited about them than anyone else.  They are so sweet, gorgeous and bring back a waterfall of memories of summers picking them with my grandmother.  She’s still around and the boys have enjoyed getting to know her even more this summer (she will be 93 on the 23rd)!

So, with all of the blackberries and creek days around here, I thought it would be fun to find a few good blackberry related stories and whip up a delicious blackberry recipe.  You may have heard this referred to as Blackberry Slump, but I like to call it Blackberry Dumplings!  Dumplings just sounds way more appealing and it truly is what you are eating.  I mean, who doesn’t love dumplings, blackberries and sugary goodness?  Besides, it is super simple to make and if you do not have blackberry bushes in your backyard, now is the time to buy them at the grocery store.  You can also pick up a bag of frozen ones.

Let your kids have a part in creating this recipe with you.  Discuss the books that you all read together, and maybe even find a recipe book to dive in to!  I used to love to read recipe books when I was little.  In order to keep yours and your child’s reading eyes the best they can be, make sure to get them checked and look for glasses that don’t break the bank (if you need them).  Zenni Optical offers prescription as well as nonprescription eyewear and sunglasses for adults and kids.  My husband is the only one in the family so far with a prescription, but the rest of us definitely keep our eyes protected from the sun.  I love the options Zenni has, but more importantly, I love the prices.  They are definitely competitive and will save you money.

So, what are your tips for keeping summer reading fun and entertaining?  I’d love to hear!

I’ve rarely had blackberries but this tempts me to be a regular for them. Recipe’s very feasible as well, so nothing’s stopping me from making this!
