When it comes to spring cleaning I can tell you that I am no expert. I honestly can’t stand cleaning unless the moment strikes me. Yes, I do go on the occasional clean streak when the house is spick and span for about a day. Here’s the deal, when you have kids living in your home, you just have to accept that your house is not going to be spotless all the time. I am ok with that fact. I have, however, found the best DIY all-purpose cleaner that is super simple and works extremely well. And the best part about it is that I bet you have everything you need on hand right now!
We went on a little shopping trip to make sure we were all set for spring cleaning this year. Next week is spring break which means it is the perfect time to get things done while I’m out of work and the boys are out of school. While I admit that I don’t think we have done a very good job when they were little of getting them involved in chores, we are most definitely training them now on what they can be doing and why they should be doing it. It is my belief that kids should learn to pitch in and help out because that is what family does, not because they want something or earn a reward. That is just my opinion.
FREE PRINTABLE CHORE CHARTS FOR KIDS
We have great weekly/monthly chore charts that both boys use. You are welcome to download a free one as well as check out a few of the tips I have for getting kids to participate with chores. These all work great when you are thinking about spring cleaning.
So, our shopping trip led us to Walmart where we found some pretty great prices on a few products we needed to stock up on. First of all, the boys’ bathroom was in desperate need of toilet paper so I grabbed more of the Cottonelle® Clean Care with the CleanRipple texture. This stuff works wonders for messy little boys who are still trying to figure it all out! The bottom line is, it just cleans better. I grabbed some Scott® 1000 for our bathroom since it is such a great value for your buck while still providing quality. And last but not least, we picked up more Viva® Vantage® and Viva® Towels. I love the Viva® Vantage® because of the scrubby texture. These towels truly are work horses and will be great for scrubbing the kitchen and the bathrooms. I even use them to wipe down our extra sticky stainless steel refrigerator! Yes, they are that tough. I love the Viva® Towels for just about anything. They are still just as tough as the Vantage® but they are still soft enough to wipe off little icky-sticky faces covered in peanut butter and honey.
DIY ALL-PURPOSE CLEANER
Armed with all of my paper supplies, I was ready to get cleaning! The last thing I needed to do was to mix up a little of my DIY all-purpose cleaner. I use this on everything from our wooden dinning table to the side of the house to remove mildew! No kidding. This stuff works great and costs next to nothing to make.
What you will need:
- distilled white vinegar
- lemon essential oil or your favorite natural lemon air freshener
Simply pour 3 parts water to 1 part vinegar into a clean spray bottle. Swish it together well while it is in the bottle. I just give mine a good swirl. Next, I like to add about a tablespoon of my favorite natural lemon air freshener. You could also use lemon essential oils (only a few drops). You are done!
If you are looking for a quick and easy way to clean your oven, simply sprinkle it with baking soda and spray this mixture on top. Let it soak for a few minutes and then wipe it out. Just make sure you have plenty of the Viva® Vantage® scrubby towels on hand!
