I am thrilled to be offering you a fun giveaway today sponsored by Scholastic! Scholastic is a name that has been well trusted ever since I was a little girl pouring over book choices. The boys just recently had their Scholastic Book Fair at school and I was excited to see Hero Dog! as a choice.
NOT JUST ANOTHER CHAPTER BOOK
At first, you may think that this is just a fun little read for your 2nd and 3rd graders, but upon closer inspection you will see that it was written by a kid herself! Hilde Lysiak is a real life reporter for her home town and started the Orange Street News when she was just 7 years old! At the age of 9 she wrote and published the first of her series of books that are offered in the Scholastic Branches books. The title of the book is Hero Dog! (Hilde Cracks the Case #1) and it was written using her real life encounters as a neighborhood reporter. How cool is that?!
HOW TO BECOME A KID REPORTER
If ever there was someone to teach kids about becoming a kid reporter, it would be Hilde Lysiak. Her father was a reporter which sparked her interest at a young age. Hero Dog is not only a fun and easy to read chapter book, but it also lays out all the skills young reporters need to do the job right. Hilde even breaks down words and definitions commonly used by reporters. Make sure to download this handy discussion guide in order to encourage even more reporting skills and discussion about the book. If you are a classroom teacher, this incorporates the standards! Your kids will be reporters in no time!
HERO DOG! (HILDE CRACKS THE CASE #1)
This book is a very easy and fun read for kids. Davis is in first grade and has been enjoying it. I do tend to need to read along with him still just so that he can pick up the understanding. If you have a 2nd or 3rd grader this would be a perfect first chapter book in order to establish independent reading in books that have less pictures. Even as an adult this book captures my attention and leaves me wanting to know what will happen next. It is also fascinating as an adult to read a book that was written by a child my own children’s age! I am impressed with her skill and excited about her future endeavors.
Hilde, the reporter for her neighborhood, is trying to solve the case of the break-in on Orange Street. Pies and cupcakes have gone missing and the Bake-Off Bonanza may be ruined! With her sister Izzy’s help, the duo will follow the clues, talk to neighbors and solve the mystery.
Scholastic Branches books are perfect for encouraging more independent reading of chapter books. The chapters are short and broken down in bite sized pieces that do not discourage new readers. There are also still a few pictures associated on every page in order to keep interest.
