Ever since I can remember I have been snuggling with Graham at night for a few minutes. The older he gets the more he talks. I love these moments because it is often when the hidden parts of the day come pouring out and I find out about things he loves, things that made him sad or just ideas he has for the future. Friday night Graham was eager to tell me about an idea he had for Saturday.
“Mom, I really think we should throw a surprise party for God.”
I asked him what his plans were and he started revealing a well thought out plan he had evidently come up with earlier that day. He wanted to invite over Nana and Poppy as well as his Aunt, Uncle and cousins. We should have a chocolate cake (that was fancy) and he was going to write the invitations and deliver them in the morning. Decorations were going to consist of Christmas lights placed around the tables and he already had a song picked out (His Kind of Love by Group 1 Crew). I told him that I thought it sounded like an excellent idea and that I would be happy to bake a chocolate cake.
Saturday morning came and he woke up on his own, put on dress clothes and got busy making invitations. Once he was done he was out the door and ready to deliver them. I asked him about the dress clothes and he said it was for the party. We all needed to look nice for God’s surprise party. Of course, it wouldn’t be a surprise party without someone jumping out from behind the couch and yelling “Surprise” so Graham did just that as people entered the house. As soon as everyone made it we gathered around the table and Graham said a prayer thanking God for all He is and all He does. To say that my heart was overflowing would be an understatement.
I couldn’t think of a better reason to celebrate! If only I could think a little more like Graham and celebrate God for who He is on all occasions and for the small things he blesses us with everyday. To thank Him for being constant, for chasing us when we run and picking us up when we fall. I think the song Graham picked was absolutely perfect… “His kind of love is reckless for us, His kind of love will never give up…”.
Not only did we celebrate our amazing God, but we also had great time with family and I figured out a quick and easy cake recipe that everyone enjoyed!

What a sweet idea! (Literally!) That cake also looks amazing! Handful of raspberries, though? Looks more like a few fistfuls. 🙂 LOVE.

Ha! Emilie, I guess a handful was an understatement huh? Remember watching Justin Wilson on TV and his crazy measurements? Now I need to go YouTube him.

Thank you Jenn. Those boys never cease to surprise me. Just today he all but cried over me using the reusable shopping bags at Ingles! “Mom, I saw this commercial where there were mountains of trash because of plastic. We have to do something”.

Awwwww! What a neat kid! Sounds like his mom’s pretty cool too (for embracing the idea full force and not blowing it off). A+’s all around. 🙂

That’s amazing, that Graham came up with that idea. It’s even cooler that you went along with it and supported his concept. I’m sure God was pleased with His surprise party.

I love Graham’s tender heart towards the Lord. What a sweet fragrance it must be to Him when a child’s heart is turned towards him like that! My 9yo would do the same thing and show up in a suit and tie of his own accord. It’s so cool! Oh for our hearts and minds to be more childlike. Thank you for sharing that with us!

Thank you Mimi. I know. I often say that these babies teach me WAY more than I will ever teach them. Especially about God.
